Sacred City of Anuradhapura
Wander through towering stupas, sacred bodhi trees, and the silent echoes of a lost kingdom.
UNESCO-listed ancient capital
Anuradhapura served as the first established kingdom in Sri Lanka, flourishing for over a millennium as the political and religious heart of the island. Its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognizes the city’s extensive archaeological remains, sophisticated urban planning and enduring cultural significance.
Ruwanwelisaya Stupa & Jetavanaramaya
Ruwanwelisaya is a massive hemispherical stupa built by King Dutugemunu in the second century BCE, revered as a sacred site containing relics of the Buddha. Nearby, Jetavanaramaya was once the third tallest structure in the ancient world, notable for its enormous brick construction and role in monastic life.
Sri Maha Bodhi Tree – the world’s oldest documented tree
The Sri Maha Bodhi Tree is a sacred fig tree planted in 288 BCE from a sapling of the original Bodhi Tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Pilgrims visit daily to offer prayers, and it is carefully maintained, making it the oldest living human-planted tree with a known planting date in the world.
Sacred bathing ponds & moonstone carvings
Anuradhapura’s ancient reservoirs, or “tanks,” were engineering marvels designed to store water for ritual and practical use, demonstrating advanced hydraulic planning. Moonstone carvings, semi-circular stone slabs at the entrances of temples, feature intricate symbolic motifs representing Buddhist cosmology and moral teachings.
Guided storytelling of royal dynasties & Buddhist rituals
Visitors can learn about the lives of Sri Lanka’s ancient kings, their dynastic politics and monumental architectural contributions through guided tours. These narratives are often intertwined with explanations of Buddhist rituals, showing how religious practices influenced daily governance and the social fabric of the kingdom.
