Kandy & Beyond
Pay homage at the Temple of the Tooth, stroll around Kandy Lake, and discover craft markets and colonial charm.
Temple of the Tooth Relic
The Temple of the Tooth, or Sri Dalada Maligawa, houses a sacred relic of the Buddha’s tooth, making it one of the most venerated Buddhist sites in the world. The temple complex blends Kandyan architecture with elaborate carvings, frescoes and daily ritual ceremonies that draw both pilgrims and visitors.
Kandy Lake promenade walk
Kandy Lake, an artificial lake built by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in 1807, offers a serene waterside setting in the heart of the city. A leisurely walk along its promenade provides views of the surrounding hills, temple structures and occasional encounters with native birds and monkeys.
Local artisan and gemstone markets
Kandy’s bustling markets showcase traditional craftsmanship, including handwoven textiles, wood carvings, silverware and intricate jewelry. Gemstone shops feature Sri Lanka’s famous sapphires, moonstones and rubies, often accompanied by local stories of mining, folklore and gem lore.
Traditional Kandyan dance performance (optional)
Kandyan dance is a centuries-old performance art blending ritual, music and acrobatics, historically performed to honor the gods and celebrate royal events. Spectacular costumes, elaborate masks and energetic drum rhythms provide an immersive cultural experience that highlights Sri Lanka’s artistic heritage.
Tea & snack stop at a colonial-era café
Colonial-era cafés in Kandy retain the charm of British influence with vintage interiors, wooden furniture and serene views. Guests can savor locally grown Ceylon tea paired with traditional Sri Lankan sweets, offering a taste of both history and hospitality.
